A few days ago, initial heralds of spring were spotted at Saaremaa’s southern cape of Sõrve Säär – the seagulls. A sure sign of spring coming again. Soon.

«As soon as the sea opens up, here come the gulls,» states the Sõrve logbook. «And it is always the seagulls that come first. Today, ten of these could be seen. However, they’ve been around for a couple of days already,» writes the newspaper Meie Maa.

At the birdstation’s feeding grounds, bramblings came in largest numbers. Forty, altogether – and six chaffinches.  A large flock of greenfinches, however, seems to have dissapeared, with only a few left, say the birdstation men Mati Martinson and Ainar Unus.

As the week kicked off, the sea broke forth with openings and icebergs. Filled with whistlers and ducks. Further off, at ice edge, solitary seals could be seen.
