Latvia is welcome in the eurozone, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in Tallinn on Tuesday.

"We look forward to welcoming Latvia in eurozone," Van Rompuy said at a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip.

"As long as new countries want to join eurozone this demonstrates that the eurozone is still 'sexy'," he said.

The prime minister of Estonia said in a press release after the meeting that Latvia's membership will strengthen the euro and thus will be definitely in the interest of Estonia.

The topics dealt with at Ansip's meeting with the visiting European Council president included developments in the euro area and Latvia's possible accession to the euro area from the start of 2014, spokespeople for the Estonian government said.

The Latvian government is set to file a formal application to join the common currency next week and expects to switch to the euro from Jan. 1 next year, becoming the 18th member of the euro area.
