The Estonian retailer Prisma Peremarket, a holding of the Finnish SOK group, generated revenues of 178 million euros and made a profit of 2.7 million euros last year.

Revenues grew by almost 20 percent year-on-year and the profit is a marked improvement compared with the year-earlier loss of 600,000 euros.

The number of customers increased by 10 percent during the year, the company said.

The profit made up 1.5 percent of the revenue. "On the global market of hyper- and supermarkets a profit forming 2-4 percent of revenue is considered a good result. Thus, we managed to achieve a very satisfactory result, considering the tight competition on the Estonian retail market," executive director Janne Lihavainen said.

Purchases made in Tallinn stores of the chain increased 5 percent. "In addition to customer numbers also average purchases have grown, occasionally surpassing even year 2008, our record year to date," Lihavainen said.

The company opened a new store in Estonia's second-largest city Tartu last year, creating more than 100 new jobs. It employs nearly 1,200 people altogether in Tallinn, Tartu and Narva.
