Estonia's sugar consumption drops 30 pct on year

Consumption of sugar in Estonia during the 12 months from October 2011 to the end of September 2012 totaled 37,490 tons, 29.6 percent less than in the previous similar period, Statistics Estonia said on Friday.

Average consumption per capita came to 27.98 kilograms, down from 39.74 kilograms during the period from October 2010 to end-September 2011.

During the period ended Sept. 30, 2012, 52,242 tons of sugar was imported into Estonia, 27.4 percent less than in the previous 12-month period. In imports white sugar made up 25,932 tons and products containing added sugar 26,008 tons.

Export of sugar grew 4.4 percent year on year to 15, 256 tons. Exports of white sugar totaled 4,696 tons and of products containing added sugar 9,747 tons.

Estonia's sugar stocks decreased from 2,836 tons to 1,807 tons during the period.

Statistics Estonia added in a footnote to the figures that the data of the two last periods may be subject to adjustment.
