Yesterday, head of Defence Forces Brigadier General Riho Terras briefed 16 United States’ general on the basics of Estonian defence policy, the system of national defence and ten-year national defence plans, at Museum of Occupations.

The US generals were deeply impressed by what they saw and heard.

«I was deeply impressed by the strong national identity of the Estonians. I also realized, deeper than before, your need for allies to defend your country. Based on the information received, I may say that the new national defence development plan is a very well balanced document with sufficient investments into initial defence capabilities, while relying on NATO article 5 responsibilities of your allies and of yourselves,» said head of delegation, Retired General Michael Carns.

The 16 US generals are visiting Estonia within a national study programme meant to familiarise themselves with the allies’ defence systems, in order to guarantee success of US joint operations doctrine. The study trip is aimed at helping the generals understand the allies’ vision on security issues and provide them with an overview of how defence politics are being framed. Prior coming to Estonia, the generals visited Germany. From here, they proceed to Latvia and Lithuania.
