Paet stated that the opening of an Estonian embassy in New Delhi will bring Estonia-India relations to a new level.
“We would like to intensify co-operation as well as business and cultural contacts with India, one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. We’d also like to develop political ties,” Paet stated. “India’s importance as one of Estonia’s trade partners has increased from year to year, and we hope that the opening of the embassy and the visit by a business delegation will help to develop our bilateral economic relations,” he added.
Tomorrow Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will open a business seminar in New Delhi that will be held in co-operation with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Accompanying Paet on his visit to Sri Lanka and India is a 25-member delegation of Estonian entrepreneurs. The business delegation is made up of Estonian entrepreneurs from the logistics and IT sectors as well as producers of security and surveillance equipment, wooden houses, polyethylene products, motor and industrial oils, and rawhide and tanned hides.
In New Delhi, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with Foreign Minister of India Salman Khursid, Deputy Foreign Minister Preneet Kaur, Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot, and Minister of Shipping G.K. Vasan. Topics to be discussed at the meetings are Estonia-India relations, including economic co-operation, regional developments, the European Union’s relations with India, and co-operation within international organisations.
On 14 February Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will be on a working visit to Sri Lanka. According to Foreign Minister Paet, Estonia would like to develop economic relations with Sri Lanka. “Sri Lanka is one of Southern Asia’s most important shipping countries, and Estonia could serve as a gateway to the Euriopean Union and Russian markets for Sri Lanka,” he added. On 14 February Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will open a seminar for Estonian and Sri Lankan entrepreneurs in Colombo, which will take place in co-operation with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Sri Lanka.
In Colombo, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet will meet with Minister for Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and Minister of Trade and Industry Rishad Bathiyutheen. Topics to be discussed at the meetings are Estonia-Sri Lanka bilateral relations, including economic co-operation, relations between Sri Lanka and the European Union, and the situation in the region.
