The noncommissioned officers' school of the Estonian National Defense College currently located at Meegomae south of the regional capital of Võru will next year get a new building at the Taara military compound on the outskirts of the city.

Defense Minister Urmas Reinsalu who visited the school on Wednesday said the buildings currently at the disposal of the school are in need of a major overhaul but their renovation and separate maintenance is financially impractical. "Because of that a new living and study building meeting all requirements will be built for the school in the Taara compound by the end of 2014."

The Taara compound on the outskirts of Võru is the base of the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion where two modern barracks, a study building, a staff building, a military hospital and warehouses have been put up in the last two decades in addition to the renovation of the historic Taara barracks. Over the last 10 years more than 22 million euros has been invested in the compound.

The minister said during his visit to the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion that its base is the most modern compound of the defense forces at present. "Our aim is to provide all other units of the defense forces with equally good compounds in coming years," he said.

It is planned to modernize the living conditions of all conscripts in the next two years for which new barracks with a capacity of 1,200 will be built in existing compounds.
