A Latvian citizen died in a traffic accident in Estonia's Harju County on Monday night.

The Rescue Center received a call at 12:25 a.m. about a traffic accident on the 8th kilometer of the Tallinn-Saku-Laagri road, spokespeople for the Police and Border Guard Board said.

According to initial information a Volkswagen with a Latvian registration number was moving from Tallinn toward Saku, but due to unknown reasons the driver drove off the road and hit a tree.

The passenger, a 31-year-old Latvian woman, flew out of the vehicle and died on the spot.

When the police arrived, they found a man with signs of intoxication who did not need medical attention. He was probably a Latvian citizen, but was taken to the police station for further investigation.

According to a spokesman of the North prefecture's West-Harju police station, Raiko Kiik, the accident is being investigated and at present there are still many unanswered questions, including who was driving the car and whether the person was intoxicated during the accident or not.
