A man suspected of killing the alleged leader of Estonia's underworld Nikolai Tarankov was taken into custody by a first-tier court at the end of last week.

Tarankov's body with bullet wounds was found in the western town of Haapsalu on Sept. 14. The police detained the suspected killer already on Sept. 22, the day Tarankov was buried.

On Sept. 24 the Harju County Court granted the request of the Office of the Prosecutor General to take the suspect into custody. "He has been formally named as suspect, there are no other suspects in the case at this point," a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office told BNS.

The spokesperson declined further comment so as not to prejudice the ongoing investigation.
