Crimes claim no lives in January

Regarding serious crimes against persons, this year is off to a good start in Estonia as January featured no manslaughter or murder. 

While last year January had two manslaughters and no murders including attempts, this year there have been none in either category, said justice ministry.  

According to preliminary data, 40 people lost lives last year due to crimes – the lowest ever for Estonia.  Attempts included, 2015 featured 38 incidents of manslaughter and 12 murders in which 40 people lost their lives. The year before  that, manslaughters were 42 and murders 13 with 42 lives taken, as revealed by justice ministry data.

In 2013 the slaughters and murders amounted to 62 claiming 52 lives. The figures for 2012 were 80 and 64, and in 2011 it stood at 100 and 65 respectively.

For comparison: in 2005, Estonia featured 137 manslaughters and 19 murders attempts included, in which 123 lives were lost.
