The Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund has paid out 607,000 euros worth of redundancy benefits to 129 former employees of Estonian Air.

AS Estonian Air last week submitted applications to the Unemployment Insurance Fund for its laid off workers to be paid benefits, the fund said. Some of the benefits were paid on Friday and the rest on Monday, in the total gross amount of 606,991 euros.

This is the biggest total sum of redundancy benefits that has been paid out to employees of a single company this year, chairman of the board of the fund Meelis Paavel said.

"Cooperation with Estonian Air was very good -- therefore we processed the redundancy applications faster than usual and all former Estonian Air employees will get their benefits before Christmas," Paavel added.

The national airline Estonian Air which operated its last flight on Nov. 7 submitted a bankruptcy petition to the Harju county court on Nov. 20.
