The opposition Center Party expects to collect 40,000 signatures in ten days in support of its leader and Mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar.

The secretary general of the Center Party, Priit Toobal, told the city-run television station that many voters of Edgar Savisaar dissatisfied with the removal of the mayor from office have turned to the party with a wish to express their support for Savisaar. Hence the party has decided to start collecting signatures on Tuesday.

The signatures are to be collected by several teams of young people, who will focus on the districts of Lasnamae and Pirita where Savisaar ran in the elections.

The signatures will be forwarded to the city council that will ask for the stance of the Supreme Court as regards the removal of the elected mayor from office on the basis of mere suspicions, according to Toobal.

The ISS on Sept. 22 conducted a search in the home of Savisaar as part of an investigation into alleged repeated accepting of bribes in 2014 and 2015 in assets and favors for himself as well as for a third party. Besides Savisaar, six persons were declared suspects in the proceeding.

The Harju county court Sept. 30 decided to remove Savisaar from the office of mayor for the duration of the pretrial investigation.
