Mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar is to step into public on Aug. 20, the 24th anniversary of Estonia regaining its independence, for the first time since March.

The long-serving leader of the Center Party is recovering from a severe bout of streptococcal infection that necessitated the amputation of his right leg above knee on March 23 to stop the spread of the disease. The surgeries on     Savisaar were performed at the Tartu University Hospital.

Following regenerative treatment at East-Tallinn Central Hospital Savisaar has been recovering at his home on Hundisilma farm situated on the fringes of the Lahemaa National Park some 65 kilometers from the capital since June 19.

Savisaar returned from sick leave on Aug. 5 when he headed the Tallinn city government's cabinet meeting.
