Driver of vehicle in four-victim crash was severely drunk

The 23-year-old driver of the car in which four people were killed in an accident in Estonia's southern Tartu County on the evening of Aug. 4 was severely intoxicated, the investigation has established.

Spokespeople for the South district prosecutor's office said on Monday the blood alcohol level of the driver, identified by his first name as Randy, was 2.21 permille.

A blood alcohol level above 1.5 permille in the driver of a motor vehicle is punishable pursuant to criminal procedure in Estonia.

The blood alcohol level of the passenger in the front seat, identified by his first name and age as Sten, 23, was 1.12 permille, whereas the two 15-year-old female victims in the back seat were sober. In none of the victims traces of narcotic substances were found.

According to a statement from the driver of a car that the Audi with four young people on board overtook immediately before the crash the speed of the vehicle was definitely in excess of 100 kmh.

«There is still no information about an oncoming vehicle,» spokespeople for the prosecutor's office told BNS.

The accident in which four people were killed in a car that went out of control in a gentle curve and hit a tree in Vehendi village of the Rannu municipality happened on the evening of Aug. 4.

The driver of the vehicle had been repeatedly punished for traffic offenses both under misdemeanor and criminal procedure and his license had been suspended.
