Four young people die in traffic accident in Tartu County

A very serious traffic accident took place in Estonia's Tartu County on Tuesday evening which claimed the lives of four young people.

At 8:52 p.m. the rescue center got a call saying that in the Rannu municipality a very serious traffic accident took place as a car drove off the road and hit a tree.

According to initial information an Audi lost control in a gentle curve and drove off the right side of the road into a tree, spokespeople for the South prefecture told BNS, adding that the vehicle became totally deformed.

The car had four passengers -- two 15-year-old girls and two 23-year-old men -- who all died in the accident. According to initial information one of the men was driving the car.

A criminal investigation has been launched to find out more information about the accident, including whether the driver was intoxicated.

According to operational manager of the South prefecture Heiki Rood, Tuesday's traffic accident was one of the most tragic ones in several years.

This year 42 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents in Estonia.
