Members of a search and regional studies club, Kamerad, found an ancient treasure consisting of coins in the Uhtna Village near Rakvere in Estonia's West-Viru County, the regional newspaper Virumaa Teataja reports.

The club's members are trying to find the place where the Battle of Wesenberg took place in 1268. On Friday they discovered Roman coins instead.

According to the newspaper three coins had been dug out by Friday afternoon and there are probably more in the ground. At present they are waiting for archaeologists to arrive.

Ain Maesalu, an archaeologist at the University of Tartu who was with the club when the treasure was found, said that it could be the biggest finding from that era in Estonia.
