Parliamentary group of Estonia's Center Party on Tuesday handed in the first bill of the 13th Riigikogu which seeks to raise school lunch support from 0.78 euros to one euro.

According to deputy chairman of the group Mailis Reps the school lunch support needs raising because the present sum has not guaranteed a nutritious meal for a long time, spokespeople for the group said.

Reps added that it is not a secret that tens of thousands of children live in poverty in Estonia and school lunch might be the meal of the day for many of them.

According to Reps the price of food products has risen by nearly 23 percent compared to 2010 but the school lunch support has only increased by 4 percent.

In 2011 the first bill of the 12th Riigikogu which was also handed in by the Center Party was the school lunch bill. «This motion was left in the drawer of the committee chairman for four years. I sincerely hope that today's motion will have a different fate. Every rationally thinking person should understand that 78 cents in not a big enough support,» Reps said.
