Estonia's 13th Riigikogu at its first sitting elected Eiki Nestor of the Social Democratic Party (SDE) as the chairman of the parliament.

Nestor got the votes of 58 members of the parliament and candidate of the Free Party Andres Herkel received 41 votes of the 100 MPs present at the sitting.

One ballot of the secret voting was invalid since it had not been filled out.

The sitting had 100 MPs present instead of the usual 101 since Edgar Savisaar who was elected to the parliament is in the hospital at the moment.
