An electoral college at the Estonian Academy of Arts on Tuesday elected Mart Kalm as new rector of the academy.

The three candidates vying for the post were Mart Kalm, the academy's current science prorector, Andres Tali, dean of the faculty of free arts, and Ivar Sakk, head of the department for graphic design.

Kalm won the election with 37 votes against ten votes given for Sakk and Tali each. Fifty-seven out of the electoral college's 61 members were present during the vote, spokespeople for the university said.

Kalm will start his five-year tenure as rector on April 4.
