Estonian courts last year approved electronic surveillance of 182 convicts on probation and as of Monday 83 individuals were wearing an ankle bracelet.

The number of persons fitted with an ankle monitor keeps constantly changing because more convicts are put under electronic surveillance all the time while the term of wearing an ankle bracelet of others runs out or they breach the rules and are returned to prison, spokeswoman for the Justice Ministry Maria-Elisa Tuulik told BNS.

«Most persons pass electronic surveillance successfully,» she said. «Violations of the surveillance conditions are mostly connected with ignoring the ban on alcohol consumption.»

In 2013 a total of 203 convicts were kept under electronic surveillance.

Since the option became available in Estonia in May 2007, 1,390 persons altogether have worn an ankle monitor.
