Rector of the Tallinn University of Technology Andres Keevallik is to resign due to a traffic accident he caused on Tuesday evening while intoxicated.

The police got a call on Tuesday evening at 10:30 p.m. that a car had been driven through a shop-window in Central Tallinn, reporter.ee news portal writes. The police discovered that the 71-year-old Keevallik was intoxicated. An investigation has been launched to determine the details of the incident.

Keevallik said that he regrets his actions, and is extremely sad and shocked. He went on vacation on Wednesday but promised beforehand that he would resign.

According to latest information Keevallik had less than 1.5 per mill blood alcohol content which means that his act would be classified as a misdemeanor.

Estonian Minister of Education and Research Jevgeni Ossinovski on Thursday condemned Keevallik's actions. «Sitting behind the wheel while being intoxicated and causing an accident deserves condemnation. Drunk driving doesn't only pose a threat to the person doing it but also to all other citizens. Primarily the rector himself and the university can make the resignation decision,» Ossinovski said.
