Yesterday at Ämari Air Base, NATO troops practiced polite escort home for stray planes. The scenario was by Germans from Ramstein Air Base in South-West Germany: a plane from a friendly nation, with communication and navigation out of order, finds itself in foreign air space. It is there approached by Finnish fighters to nicely point the plane homewards where it comes under German fighters’ care.

According to Estonian Air Forces commander Colonel Jaak Tarien, we are most interested «air-air»-type exercises i.e. actions happening up in the air. Considering the tensions on EU external border, yesterday’s scenario was somewhat mild; even so, the Colonel said Estonia has no reasons for excessive worry for our airspace. As part and parcel of the exercises a real flight took place, participated by Estonian and German photographers.

The NATO exercises involved Finns, Swedes, Canadians, Portuguese, Dutch, Czechs, Brits, Americans and Germans.
