Defence attorneys for Estonian security police officer Eston Kohver, kidnapped from Estonia and accused of espionage in Moscow, on Monday succeeded in meeting the latter for the first time.

As confirmed to Baltic News Service (BNS) by the lawyers Nikolai Polozov and Mark Feigin, they ended their meeting with Mr Kohver at about 3.15 pm today.

According to Mr Feigin, the meeting lasted for nearly an hour. However, he declined to specify the content of their conversations citing an advocate’s obligation to keep client’s secrets. Mr Feigin was also unwilling to comment on whether Mr Kohver agreed to work with the new advocates.

Mr Feigin said Mr Kohver is in excellent physical condition, but desired not to comment on the officer’s mental state.

According to Mr Feigin, Mr Kohver and the advocates communicated in the Russian language. Asked if Mr Kohver might need an interpreter in days that lay ahead, the advocate opted not to answer.

The advocate added they have filed a petition to have Mr Kohver released from custody, to be deliberated by court on September 18th.

«The situation being very complex, I cannot provide further specific comments,» said Mr Feigin.

Earlier, Mr Polozov has announced via social media that he applied to Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) investigative department to gain access to the file of Mr Kohver. Thereafter, he was shown the file which, however, was marked as «confidential» and he promised by signature to keep the secret.

On September 10th, the Estonian side appointed Mark Feigin and Nikolai Polozov as advocates to Mr Kohver.

As assessed by Mr Feigin there are several aspects to the Kohver case pointing to a positive, but not overly swift, solution of the matter.

At inquiry by Postimees, Estonian foreign ministry said the next meeting with the lawyers is scheduled for Wednesday.
