The head of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Archbishop Andres Poder, has issued a call for the people to pray for peace in Syria.

In his appeal issued on Wednesday, Archbishop Poder cites the call to pray for Syria by Munib A. Younan, president of the Lutheran World Federation, and the invitation of  Pope Francis for people of all faiths to join him and the world's Catholics in a day of prayer and fasting on Sept. 7 to end the conflict in Syria.

«Joining these calls, I'm asking everyone to take Syria into our prayers on Saturday in the belief and hope that the people of Syria and the great powers of the world are able to be 'peacemakers',» the church leader said with reference to the Gospel of Matthew.

Poder said the leaders of several major churches have said words of warning as regards a possible military intervention in Syria. «Especially if it's planned before the details of the use of banned chemical weapons have been established and a mandate received from the United Nations Organization,» the archbishop said. «According to church leaders, bombs do not solve social and political problems,» he added.
