Total production by Estonian construction enterprises at home and abroad in the second quarter of this year was 0.4 percent bigger than in the same period a year ago, Statistics Estonia said on Thursday.

In Estonia construction activities increased 4 percent but in foreign countries the volume built contracted by nearly a third.

The production value of construction enterprises amounted to 557 million euros in the second quarter, of which the production value of building construction was 326 million euros and of civil engineering 231 million euros. Compared to the second quarter of 2012, the volume of building construction in real terms remained the same but the volume of civil engineering increased 2 percent.

The increase in domestic activity was mainly the result of an upturn in new building construction and was supported also by civil engineering. Repair and reconstruction of buildings remained on the level of the previous year.

The construction volume of Estonian construction enterprises in foreign countries decreased for the second quarter in a row in year-on-year comparison. Volumes decreased in building construction and civil engineering alike. Construction volumes in foreign countries accounted for 8 percent of the total volume of construction in the second quarter, compared with 11 percent in the second quarter of 2012.

According to data of the Register of Construction Works, the number of dwelling completions in the second quarter was 475, unchanged from the second quarter of 2012. More than a half of completed dwellings were situated in one-family, two-family or terraced houses, which is why also the average useful floor area of the dwellings was big, or 137 square meters per dwelling.

The majority of completed dwellings were situated in rural municipalities neighboring Tallinn. There is still demand for new dwellings with good location and quality on the construction market.

During the second quarter building permits were issued for the construction of 834 dwellings, 100 dwellings more than in the same quarter a year ago. The most popular type of building was single-family house.

The number of completed non-residential buildings was 186 and their aggregate useful floor area was 124,600 square meters. The completions were primarily new industrial, storage and commercial buildings. Compared to the second quarter of 2012, the useful floor area as well as the cubic capacity of completed non-residential buildings increased.
