Estonia's Tartu County Court sentenced to prison a young woman who was charged with causing serious injuries to her one-month old child.

The lower-level court found a 24-year old woman guilty of causing serious physical harm to an infant and sentenced her to four years and six months' imprisonment. Because the criminal case was settled in a shortened procedure the sentence was cut by one third to three years of which the woman has to serve six months. The rest of the imprisonment was sentenced conditionally with three years on probation.

The woman was forbidden to consume alcohol or drugs while on probation and be in contact with people punished pursuant to criminal procedure. She also has to participate in social aid programs offered by her probation officer and pay 1,500 euros to cover the procedure expenses.

In February this year the South prefecture acquired information about a one-month old child who was brought to hospital with serious injuries. The child protection service opened criminal proceedings to ascertain the facts concerning the case and the woman was charged with using physical violence on her child on Feb. 13-18.
