Ministry: employment contracts act needs no changes.

Head of labor relations policy at the Ministry of Social Affairs Seili Suder said, when commenting on central bank economist Liina Malk's recent analysis, that the new employment contracts act created a modern legal environment for labor relations and that the law cannot possibly govern all aspects of the labor market. Malk's research concluded that the law has had a negative effect on labor mobility as the number of people moving from employment to unemployment is on the rise while movement from one job to another remains unchanged. Suder said that while Liina Malk's analysis is thorough and useful, the law does not regulate all aspects of the labor market and that surveys have shown people are satisfied with post-lay-off security, including notification deadlines and benefits. «The volume of unemployment benefits and redundancy payments and making the latter available to people who leave employment on their own account is a political question however,» Suder added.

Estonia would add human rights issues to UN goals.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet said yesterday, when meeting with his EU colleagues in Brussels, that Estonia would like to see the EU pay more active attention to women's rights next year and that human rights would be included in the United Nation's sustainable development goals. «The EU wants to actively promote human rights and democracy in the world as demonstrated by the appointment of a EU human rights special representative in September of last year as well as several human rights initiatives inside the union,» Paet said.
