Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja is to take part in a conference on the history of the Baltic Sea countries in Kuressaare, the capital of Estonia's Saaremaa Island, this week.

The conference is taking place for the fifth time on Thursday, spokespeople for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

This year's theme is changes in Europe and the future of the Baltic Sea region. The subject will be discussed by the author of the Baltic Sea history seminars' idea, Finnish professor Jarmo Virmavirta, Tuomioja and European Commission Vice President Siim Kallas.

Tuomioja will also meet his Estonian colleague Urmas Paet in Kuressaare.

The conference is organized by two sister cities Kuressaare and Turku, Finland since 2009. It traditionally takes place in the same week as the Saaremaa Opera Days.
