Government cancels Russian-language teaching in four Tallinn schools.

The government did not allow four Tallinn secondary schools to continue Russian-languaged education, stating that there are no factors obstructing transition to Estonian. According to law, at least 60 percent of the subjects should be taught in Estonian. Three of the schools received funding for the transition in 2007-2010. Tallinn city officials criticised the decision, citing inadequate preparations by the Ministry of Education and Science, including shortage of methodologies, study aids and teachers.

Local elections this fall will see a number of changes.

The voter's cards issued before the elections will contain more information, including electronically accessible data. The voting slips will be different as well in order to enable their counting mechanically with the equipment used by banks for counting bills. The local elections will take place on October 20.
