The president of Germany, Joachim Gauck, voiced at his meeting with Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip today support for the Rail Baltic high-speed railway project that is seen eventually creating a direct connection between the Baltic states and Berlin.

«We cannot talk about a single European market when we don't have access to this market,» Ansip said at the meeting.

Both Gauck and Ansip view Rail Baltic as an important political project that will link the Baltic states with the rest of Europe, the government's press service said.

«Germany is doing in Europe exactly what we expect of Germany, and it is doing this very well,» the head of the Estonian government said.

Germany is among Estonia's chief trade partners, ranking fifth in 2011-2012.

The German head of state is accompanied by a business delegation looking into investment opportunities in this country.
