President calls for European data clouds.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called for increased efforts for creating secure EU data clouds at a news conference after the session of the European council for cloud computing. Ilves pointed out that the ongoing scandal over the US intelligence activities has made the issue particularly topical. "It is vital to develop Europe's own data clouds, which are subject to the EU laws and are absolutely safe for the user, since at present 95 percent of cloud computing services used in the EU belong to US enterprises," Ilves said. The president warned that the concerns for security should not result in separatism and the development of isolated systems in Europe. EU Commissioner for digital agenda Neelie Kroes, who attended the council session, called for greater confidence and transparency in the cloud services market.
