Port of Tallinn freight volumes rise in June

Ports of the Estonian state-owned company Port of Tallinn handled 2.33 million tons of freight in June, 14 percent more than in the same month a year ago, but the amount handled in the first half-year was 6 percent smaller.

The number of passengers in June grew 6 percent year on year to 0.97 million, the company told BNS. Passengers in the first six months of the year numbered 4.2 million, marking an improvement of 4 percent over the corresponding period in 2012.

Cargoes in the six months totaled 14.93 million tons, a reduction of 6 percent from January-June 2012.

In a breakdown by group of cargo, container goods grew 9 percent, liquid cargoes were broadly unchanged and bulk cargoes dropped 29 percent.

The number of cruise passengers increased by an impressive 25 percent. On the Tallinn-Helsinki route the number of passengers grew 4 percent while on the Tallinn-Stockholm route it declined one percent.

In the six months a total of 3,447 ships called at the ports of Port of Tallinn, including 1,001 freight ships and 2,446 passenger ships.

According to tentative figures the operating income of Port of Tallinn in the first six months grew by almost one-sixth year on year to 55 million euros. The period's financial results are to be endorsed at the end of July.
