Overnight domestic trips almost double

Residents of Estonia made 343,800 overnight trips within the country in the first quarter of 2013, nearly twice as many as during the same period a year earlier, figures available from Statistics Estonia show.

Leisure trips accounted for 30.5 percent and visits to relatives or friends for 55.9 percent of all domestic trips with an overnight stay. Overnight stays by Estonian residents numbered 652,400, of which 76.3 percent were with free accommodation and 23.7 percent with paid accommodation. The overall number of overnight stays during domestic trips increased 64.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2012.

Estonian residents' foreign trips with an overnight stay numbered 252,500 in the first quarter, a reduction by 6.3 percent in annual comparison.

The destination of 72 percent of overnight foreign trips was some European Union country, with Finland accounting for 20.9 percent. Trips to visit relatives or friends made up 14.6 percent and holiday trips 58.8 percent of all the foreign trips with an overnight stay.

Overnight stays by Estonian residents totaled 2.04 million during the three-month period, of which 55 percent were with free accommodation and 45 percent with paid accommodation. Compared with the first quarter of 2012, the number of overnight stays on foreign trips increased by 33.6 percent.
