An official from the Estonian Rescue Board flew to Jordan on Monday to take part in an humanitarian mission for Syrian refugees there.

For Rainer Asukula, senior duty officer at the rescue center for Eastern Estonia, this will be the fourth international assignment after missions in Pakistan in 2005 and 2011 and in Haiti in 2010.

The UNHCR headquarters in Geneva made a proposal to countries of the international humanitarian partnership to support the establishment of a new refugee camp near the town of Azraq in Jordan. The humanitarian partnership support mission in which the Estonian expert helps set up the new camp is financed by the Foreign Ministry. Besides the Estonian Foreign Ministry provides funds for the purchase of five module houses for the base camp for UNHCR personnel.

The new camp is planned to be able to accommodate 130,000 people and it would be built in three stages.

More than 1.4 million Syrians are estimated to have fled to neighboring countries following the outbreak of battles between anti-government insurgents and government forces in Syria in March 2011. In Jordan 480,000 refugees from Syria have been registered or are awaiting registration.
