One person was killed and two sustained injuries in an explosion in a production facility of the shipbuilding and industrial group BLRT in northern Tallinn on Wednesday.

The emergency center received a phone call about an explosion in a building in Kopli Street at 1:02 p.m., spokespeople for the regional rescue center for North Estonia said.

According to unconfirmed reports the explosion was caused by gas.

As a result of the blast the roof of the one-storey stone building collapsed and a fire broke out.

The victim was outside the building at the time of the blast but was hit by falling stones. Two men who were working inside the building sustained burns and contusions.

A spokesperson for BLRT told BNS the explosion occurred at the acetylene production facility of Elme Messer Gaas at 103 Kopli Street. The victim and the injured were employees of the facility.

"All the risks were localized immediately. The rescue works have been finished by now and there is no threat to the surroundings," the spokesperson said.
