Jan-May crime rate in Estonia down 3 pct on year

The overall level of crime in Estonia has dropped 3 percent in the first five months of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, with biggest declines recorded in crimes against property and the number of murders and manslaughter.

According to the Justice Ministry's crime barometer, 16,047 offenses were registered in the January-May period. The number of thefts decreased by 829 or 11 percent in annual comparison, totaling 6,538. Serious crimes against person, that is, manslaughter and murder, numbered 24, which is 12 fewer than a year earlier and also the smallest number for the period in the last five years.

On the downside, the number of rapes rose to 52 from the year-earlier 24 and cases of torture numbered 56, three more than in the same period a year ago.

All in all, the number of registered offenses decreased in 78 and increased in 86 categories of crime.
