The mayor of a rural municipality in Estonia's Saaremaa Island fell into the water and drowned during a regatta near the island of Abruka on Saturday.

The mayor of Kaarma, Margus Magi, was not wearing a life vest that would probably have saved his life.

Magi's fall was seen by the crew of the yacht that came from behind but they weren't able to help him on board immediately. When they finally succeeded, it was already too late and the medics who rushed to the scene in response to an emergency call received by the Kuressaare maritime surveillance center were unable to revive him.

An inquiry is in progress to establish the circumstances of the accident.
