Private school secures education license.

Nonprofit RK Haridus has secured an education license to open a private basic school next to the Tallinn Secondary Science School that would lend the former its name and prestige. The Ministry of Education and Science said that the school has met all formal requirements and that it had no choice but to give the green light even though it perceives privatization of basic education as a negative development. Minister Jaak Aaviksoo said that Estonia stands out in the world with its uniformly strong level of basic education and that the problem goes beyond a single education license. Aaviksoo proposed the state amend the procedure of issuing education licenses that would give the government actual say in the matter as opposed to mere record checking and said he hopes the city of Tallinn will pay more attention to shortcomings in its educational organization, the laxity of which was one of the reasons why it was possible to use a municipal school's trademark to create a private school in the first place.
