Estonia's fish catch shrinks 18 pct on year in 2012

Estonian fishermen and fishing companies harvested a total of 66,854 tons of fish last year, 18 percent less than in 2011, figures released by Statistics Estonia show.

Catches in the Baltic Sea decreased the most, shrinking by 11,138 tons or 18 percent year on year to 52,213 tons. In sprat harvesting a drop of 21 percent to 27,697 tons was recorded and the harvest of Baltic herring declined by 13 percent to 22,047 tons.

Estonian companies caught 7,576 tons of shrimp last year, 2,343 tons or 24 percent less than the year before. The overall ocean fish catch decreased by 2,598 tons or 18 percent, totaling 11,991 tons.

The catch of the second-largest ocean species, squid, meanwhile almost quadrupled to 1,248 tons compared to the year-earlier 329 tons.

The harvest of redfish shrank by two thirds, from 1,075 tons in 2011 to 368 tons last year. Harvests of other ocean species decreased by 715 tons or 27 percent, amounting to 1,902.5 tons.

The catch in inland water bodies totaled 2,650 tons, which is 11 percent less than the year before.
