Estonia's criminal police detained on Friday at a Tallinn school a 17-year-old youth who had posted a school shooting threat on a social networking site the previous night.

According to current information the young man did not plan to carry out the threat, in his own words it was a black humor joke, spokespeople for the Police and Border Guard Board said. The youth has been detained for 48 hours as a crime suspect.

"There are some things you don't joke about. We take such threats with all seriousness. History shows that the majority of school shooters give an indication of their intention in the online environment before carrying out the plan," chief of the North prefecture's crime bureau Priit Parkna said. "The internet is also a place where it is difficult for bystanders to tell the difference between a real threat and a very bad joke."

Conviction of aggravated breach of public order carries a fine or a jail term of up to five years as punishment.
