The most popular electricity package tied to the market price was 6 percent more advantageous in April than the most popular fixed-price package, the independent energy website energiaturg.ee reports.

Going by public price lists, the market-dependent package has been more advantageous in all the four months since the deregulation of the Estonian electricity market at the beginning of this year and presumably will remain the best choice in coming months as well owing to warmer weather and high reservoir water levels, lead analyst with energiaturg.ee Pirmin Tamm said.

In April the market-dependent package for an apartment with annual consumption of 1,750 kilowatt-hours, for instance, was an average 0.49 euros cheaper than the most popular fixed-price package for 12 months. In the case of a private house using electricity for heating, with annual consumption of 22,500 kWh, the price difference averaged 6.26 euros in April. The prices include VAT but show only the cost of electricity without network fees and excise duty.

"Data of [transmission network operator] Elering show that slightly more than 1,000 consumers switched electricity suppliers beginning from April, which shows that consumers have become more active and better informed and have started monitoring changes in the market price," Tamm added.

The website monitoring the electricity market is developed jointly by the law firm Glimstedt, investment company Capital Mill and IT company Helmes.
