Baltic defense officials signed on Tuesday in Luxembourg a joint procurement agreement for the purchase of ammunition for Carl Gustav anti-tank systems.

The value of the agreement is up to 50 million euros for which ammunition will be bought both for defense forces' training and in order to stock up on wartime supplies. The procurement will be conducted through the European Defense Agency that will prepare the tender and hold talks with bidders, spokespeople for the Estonian Defense Ministry said.

The agreement was signed by the defense ministers of Latvia and Lithuania, Artis Pabriks and Juozas Olekas. On behalf of Estonia the Defense Ministry's deputy secretary general for policy Sven Sakkov inked the deal as Defense Minister Urmas Reinsalu attended Veterans Day events on Tuesday.

Sakkov said some other European Union member states already have expressed the wish to join the procurement. "The European Defense Agency is publicizing the procurement among other European countries to get more countries join it. The purpose of joint procurement is to get armaments of as high quality as possible at the lowest possible price," Sakkov said.

The European Defense Agency has previously carried out two joint procurements, most recently a 228 million euro logistics procurement for Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Estonia has previously pooled resources with Sweden to buy individual equipment for troops and with Finland to obtain medium-range radars.
