At 8 pm Monday night, a Centre Party organised torch march launched from Tammsaare Park, headed towards Ministry of Economy via Viru Street and Town Hall Square.
Centre Party torch march demands that Parts resign
Quite a crowd had gathered, of people both young and old, the five-in-a-row column stretching rather long. The organisers, armed with megaphones, urged the marchers to demand the resignation of Minister of Economy Juhan Parts – which the folks also did, loudly.
In front of the Ministry of Economic Affairs building, Mayor of Tallinn and Centre Party chairman Edgar Savisaar was waiting. From the bed of a small truck parked thither, he held the opening speech.
After Mr Savisaar, all other speakers also demanded that Mr Parts resign. The organiser-in-chief, Riigikogu member Lauri Laasi vowed demonstrations would not cease ere Mr Parts resigned from his post.
Repeatedly, the sentence was spoken: Parts must heed our call. However, as the event commenced hours after Ministry working day ended, Mr Parts was unlikely to hear the sound of the protesters voices.
The demonstration proceeded by capping a Mr Parts figurine with a bucket. Another bucket was available for people to stuff their electricity bills in – for which they lacked money. In the end, the bills were festively set aflame. The event wound up by candles set in front of the ministry building, and somebody’s sarcastically expressing hopes that these would not be removed, before dawn, by IRL bulldozers.
