At the beginning of March 46,526 physical and legal persons in Estonia had tax arrears totaling 341 million euros and during the month the sum total had become smaller by 3.4 million euros, figures provided by the Tax and Customs Board show.

The number of debtors had dropped by 5,199.

Tax obligations for this year have been met to the extent of 98.7 percent and tax arrears originating in 2013 amount to 15.6 million euros, said Triin Raaper, head of the revenue service at the Tax and Customs Board.

"The high rate of fulfilment of declared tax obligations on the one hand shows prudence on the part of taxpayers in fulfilling their tax obligations and the effect from faster responding to arrears on the other," said Raaper.

As a result of collection of arrears 45 million euros was paid to the tax authority during the first two months of the year, 3.4 million euros more than in the same period in 2012 and 13.8 million euros more than in January-February 2010.

The Tax and Customs Board says that its focus in 2013 will be on persons repeatedly leaving behind indebted businesses and persons who systematically neglect their tax obligations despite being in business. In the two-month period persons who had received a bankruptcy warning from the tax administrator paid approximately 410,000 euros in taxes and several of them have started negotiations to reschedule their tax debt.
