President Toomas Hendrik Ilves proposed to parliament to appoint Alar Karis, former rector of the University of Tartu, head of Estonia's National Audit Office effective from April 7.

Under the Constitution the auditor general is appointed into office for a term of five years by the Riigikogu at the president's proposal.

Professor Karis served as rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences in 2003-2007 and of the University of Tartu in 2007-2012. He currently chairs the Estonian Rectors' Conference.

In all those capacities Karis has shown himself to be a leader of authority well versed in public administration and economy, the president said in his letter to parliament, stating that in his opinion the nominee is politically independent and has sufficient leadership experience. "Considering the personal qualities, knowledge and professional experience of Alar Karis, I believe him to be a suitable candidate for the position of auditor general."

The term of office of incumbent Mihkel Oviir expires on March 31.
