The e-Business Register, which administers the registration of companies, added 18,600 new enterprises to its roster in 2012, 1,500 more than it did the previous year, ERR News reported.

The number includes private limited companies, which made up more than half of the new entries, public limited companies, commercial associations, limited partnerships, self-employed persons and branches of foreign companies, the Center of Registers and Information Systems said.

Last year, 9,200 companies were deleted from the registry.

The number of bankruptcies dropped by 35 percent, from 256 in 2011 to 166 last year.

As of December, there were 169,400 companies registered in Estonia.
